Brodie did not want to do this.

He did not want to go and see all the funeral people, the kind who didn’t really care about the deceased but who came for the gossip and the gawking and the juiciness of watching other people suffer.

And he did not want Michelle Lancaster to go with him to what would surely be like a sideshow at a circus.

He should just gun it and zoom right on by her.

But when he saw her standing there by the road with a big leather bag and wearing a long flowing skirt and a baggy sweater and those darn scuffed-up boots, his hands started shaking again and he knew he could not drive on by.

Not with this woman. So he slowed and pulled up beside her.

She gave him a look filled with relief and hopped in the Jeep without a word.

They drove in silence for a while, the wind in their hair and the sun on their skin. He finally turned to her. “I can put the top up if the wind’s too much.”

She shook her head. “I’m okay for now.”

He’d stop for gas and then he’d tug up the old canvas top since they’d hit I-10 and drive a couple hundred miles doing close to seventy.

“Are you hungry?” he asked, suddenly tongue-tied.

“No. Did you eat the bagel?”

He shook his head. “I’m not hungry either.” He threw a glance over his shoulder. “It’s back there, still in the bag.”

She didn’t respond at first but then she turned toward him. “I can drive if you ... get tired.”

“I’m fine.”

“How far is Ocala?”

“Five or six hours.”

She looked surprised and just a tad scared.

“I guess I should have told you that.”

“No, I’m okay with that. But ... where will we stay?”

“A hotel.”

“Oh, okay.”

“You can get your own room. I’ll pay for it.”

“I can pay. I invited myself.”

“Did you think I’d take advantage of you and force you to share a room with me?”

“No. It’s not that. I just ... didn’t think it through.”

His eyes narrowed. “I can take you back home.”

“No, Brodie. I ... I’m not impulsive but once my mind is made up, I don’t back down.”

“Okay then. Do you want to go first, or should I?”

“Excuse me?”

“Show and tell, darlin’.” He shot her a daring glance. “Everything we always wanted to know about each other but were afraid to ask.”

She got a doe-eyed expression on her face, her hand clutching the door handle.

Brodie patted the torn leather seat. “I guess you didn’t think that part through either, huh?”
